Peccioli | Cedri

About 10 km from Peccioli, Cedri stands on a hillock bordered by the Isola and Roglio streams. Its origins date back to the early medieval period and was part of the rural possessions of the destroyed castle of Monte Cuccari. During the war between Volterra and San Gimignano, in 1305, the people of Volterra had a fortress with a castellated castle built in Cedri (which does not exist today), while at the end of the century the village was purchased by the Florentine house of the Alamanni-Alessandri, who ruled over the village for a long time.

At the centre of the village is the manor house, built together with the farmhouse in the 18th century. The farm villa has an irregular plan resulting from the aggregation of several buildings aligned on the main front where two portals lead to the interior spaces. The element of greatest architectural value is the portico that almost surrounds the hanging garden, The parish Church of St. George the Martyr originally dates back to the early medieval period and was radically renovated in 1833. The interior houses a valuable organ dating back to the 19th century, made by Marcello Paoli. Here is one of the sound installations of Voci, a project based on listening to a story that only happens in a certain place and under certain conditions.

Voci (Voices) is an artistic-literary itinerary that accompanies visitors through the Peccioli territory to discover unexplored places in each of which it is possible to listen to the voices of some contemporary authors. Each of them has been asked to form a piece of this itinerary, writing a story starting from the suggestions born from the encounter with some religious and non-religious buildings in the territory, mostly built near small villages, each with its own history and identity. Transposed into audio form by the authors themselves, these stories return to the place that generated them and find a way to be heard through seven works conceived by Vittorio Corsini and installed inside the Bell Tower of the Church of San Verano, the Church of the Madonna del Carmine and the Church of Serre in Peccioli, in the Church of San Giorgio in Cedri, in the Chapel of Saints Rocco and Sebastian in Fabbrica, in the Oratory of Santissima Annunziata in Ghizzano, and in the Passerotti Cinema in Peccioli.
