Cascina | San Frediano a Settimo

Although believed to be older, the church of San Frediano is documented from 1178. In 1455, it became a propositura while falling under the jurisdiction of the parish of San Casciano. The building has a single nave, originally made of verrucano blocks. Its current appearance is due to extensions in the 18th century, when the choir and dome decorated by the Pisan painter Nicola Torricini were added. The high altar was consecrated in 1844; the two side altars, one dedicated to St Peter, the other to the Madonna delle Grazie, respectively house a painting of St Peter and Madonna and Child, both from the Pisan school. The beautiful white marble stoup dates back to 1610.

The church is dedicated to the cult of San Frediano, a bishop of Irish origin to whom the prodigy of the miraculous diversion of the Auser (Serchio) river is attributed. The hermitic tradition on Monte Pisano is very ancient and there were numerous hermitages: we recall the hermitage of the cave and that of Santa Maria di Rupecava. His fame spread so quickly that the population and clergy of Lucca chose him as their bishop.

The place-name ‘Settimo’ identified the locality located at the seventh mile on the Roman road that, on the left bank of the Arno river, led to Florence, corresponding to today’s San Benedetto a Settimo, also in the municipality of Cascina.
