Terricciola | Church of San Donato

The Church of San Donato, one of the historical and artistic symbols of Terricciola, is located in the highest part of the village. It is easily accessible via a double ramp and staircase and represents a perfect blend of medieval architecture and 19th-century neoclassical renovations.

The church’s facade, renovated in the 19th century, underwent significant alterations that transformed the building’s originally medieval appearance. Nevertheless, its commanding position and historic charm make it a must-see for those visiting Terricciola.

Interior: art and architectural details

The interior of the Church of San Donato is characterized by:

  • Latin cross plan
  • Three naves, separated by sturdy pillars
  • Neoclassical decorations, with masonry cornices and pilasters typical of the mid-19th century

Notable works of art

  • Madonna and Child with Saints (18th century): attributed to Anton Domenico Bamberini, it is located in the counterfaçade.
  • Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament: richly decorated, it houses the 17th-century Flagellation of Christ, a work of great artistic impact.
  • Baptismal Font: made in 1807, it is a historical element of great interest.
  • Madonna and Child on panel (1409): kept in the sacristy, it represents a rare example of medieval art.
