Balconevisi is an ancient village located on a tuff hill between the Chiecina and Egola streams, a few kilometres from San Miniato. It boasted a church dedicated to St. Peter as early as 1260, today a ruin completely devoid of roofing but still showing stone ashlar walls and traces of decorations dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Some works such as a Crucifixion and a Deposed Christ are exhibited in the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in San Miniato. Next to the ruin stands the neo-Gothic brick bell tower built in the late 19th century. The church at the far end of the village opposite the Strozzi family’s 16th-century farm villa also dates back to the late 19th century and is modelled on the Cathedral of San Miniato. It acquired the title of the ancient church of San Pietro.
Balconevisi is known for a curious palio that is run every year in October: the Palio del Papero, an exhilarating relay race of feathered animals that cannot be touched, but only cheered on by the children who lead them. At the same time, the traditional White Truffle Festival takes place.
