In 1998, during work at the Pisa San Rossore station, an impressive series of shipwrecks emerged at a depth of about three meters. It was opened a large excavation site, concluded in 2016, which returned about thirty vessels of the Roman era and thousands of ceramic fragments, glass, metals, organic material.
The laborious work of archaeologists and restorers has recomposed the mosaic of a long history, made of trades and sailors, navigations and routes, daily life on board and shipwrecks. The archaeological excavation has allowed the discovery of a large quantity of wooden objects, which have been preserved because they were soaked in water.
