Centro storico San Miniato, centro, piazze e luoghi limitrofi, San Miniato
The San Miniato Civic Museum network consists of exhibition centres and monuments that tell important fragments of the city’s history, from the Middle Ages to much more recent events.
The archaeological area of San Genesio, with its museum, speaks of San Miniato before San Miniato: at the dawn of history, the traces of Etruscan and then Roman settlements, the birth of a village that grew up in the shadow of the Via Francigena and its sudden end in 1248. The Tower of Frederick II evokes the imperial past of the city, the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, but also the rebirth from the rubble of the Second World War, to which the Museum of Memory is dedicated, rich in testimonies for the critical elaboration of the memory linked to the traumatic events of the passage of the war front in San Miniato in 1944. The Museo di Palazzo Comunale, through its rooms (primarily the Sala delle Virtù), furnishings and decorations, bears witness to the various forms of government from the time of the Free Commune to the present day. The Museo Didattico della Scrittura (Didactic Museum of Writing) traces with educational workshops the birth and development of writing and calculation, opening up to educational experiments for schools of all levels.
