salina locatelli, via delle moie vecchie, saline di volterra
A journey into the world of salt with guided tours of the former State Saltworks (now Locatelli) in Saline di Volterra, where the purest salt in Italy is produced: the salt of Volterra. The production is accompanied by the exhibition route and the emporium where you can discover the products and the various uses of salt: from salt pearls to mother water for beauty and body care, up to the tasty salt beer.
Today the factory can be visited through an exhibition route that traces the history of the Salina, from the State Monopoly to the stories and testimonies of those who have worked here up to today.
From the Etruscans to the Romans, to arrive at the Middle Ages: from here the ancient donkey caravans, loaded with sacks of salt, set out to reach the warehouses scattered in the most distant lands via the salt roads. Here the Grand Duchy of Tuscany decided to create one of the first industrial plants in Italy, which grew together with the community until the 1900s, when the young architect Nervi created the pavilion that still houses the suggestive salt waterfall, a mountain of pure salt, surrounded by futuristic construction.
