Badia di San Savino
Via Vecchia Fiorentina, 256

The Living Crib, scheduled on 9th January, has been cancelled. Also in doubt are the initiatives on 15 and 16 January for the 900th anniversary of the Badia di San Savino.

The living nativity scene in the Badia di San Savino generally takes place on the day before the Epiphany (6th January) from 3.00 to 8 p.m. with more than a hundred figures in costume.

It retraces the Nativity of Christ, from the census to the arrival of the Magi, presenting the life of the village with markets and ancient trades. The whole village lives the nativity scene intensely, so much so that the equipment, scenery and costumes are entirely designed and made by the community.

At the entrance, in the courtyard of the Badia, visitors are welcomed and registered by the census officials; then they begin their journey among craftsmen, women, shepherds, merchants and pipers who, with their music, create the typical Christmas atmosphere. The route winds its way up the steps of the abbey to King Herod’s palace and on to the hut, where Mary and Joseph keep vigil over Jesus, and the Wise Men in procession carry gold, frankincense and myrrh.
