Museo Nazionale San Matteo
Piazza San Matteo in Soarta
Pisa

On Sunday 4 June, the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo will be open free of charge from 9.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. (last admission 1.00 p.m.).
At 11.00 a.m. – Prof. Marco Collareta, former professor of Medieval Art History at the University of Pisa, in the room where the precious painting is exhibited, will offer visitors a new story: Gentile da Fabriano’s ‘Madonna of Humility’, tempera and gold on panel, from the Pia Casa di Misericordia in Pisa.
The ‘Madonna of Humility’ is seated in an alcove whose sumptuous appearance creates a contrast that blends the Virgin’s humility and her glorification. The chronology is not certain, but the majority consensus is for the Florentine period from 1420 to 1425. The inscription in Arabic ‘La ilah illa Allah’ [There is no God but Allah] along the edges of the cloth on which the child lies, may have been taken from Arab textiles circulating in Florence following trade agreements with Tunisia and Egypt (1421 to 1423). The presence of the Virgin of Humility in the Pia Casa di Misericordia of Pisa could be connected with the Confraternity of the Florentines of Pisa.

On Friday 2 June, on the occasion of Republic Day, state museums and archaeological parks will be open free of charge.
