The “Luminaria of Santa Maria a Monte” is a procession that has been held for over 600 years on the eve of the Solemnity of Maria Assunta (Mary of the Assumption), the town patron saint.
A whole chapter was dedicated to the illumination for the feast of Saint Mary in the month of August since 1391. The procession through the streets of the village is marked by chandeliers and about 7000 wax candles which, instead of being carried by people as in the Middle Ages, are placed in small glasses and hung on white wooden frames so as to enhance the outlines of the buildings, with prayer writings and geometric designs that decorate the walls.
The religious procession starts at 9,30 pm from the Collegiata Church, proceeds along Via Carducci, via delle Grazie, Piazza della Vittoria and finishes where it started.
