Pictured: Pisan-Byzantine artist, ‘Christ Crucified and Christological Scenes’, early 13th century, tempera and gold on panel, from the Convent of St. Matthew, detail with ‘scene of the empty tomb’.
The three women who had gone, at dawn on Sunday, to the tomb of Jesus to embalm his body with aromatic oils, discover that the tomb is open and empty; a messenger (an angel in this case, but depending on the Gospel a young man, two men or two angels) reveals to them that Jesus has risen.
The National Museum of St. Matthew’ s enriches its offer with the new exhibition of medieval coins, which includes thousands of specimens, including some ancient and many minted by the medieval mints of Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Florence, up to the splendid examples from the Medici and Lorraine periods. The coins are complemented by a conspicuous number of medieval and modern merchant cards and tokens, as well as seals and medals. The collection is enriched by finds from the city and the surrounding area, including the treasure of medieval gold coins discovered in the 1930s near the Logge di Banchi
