From 1 January to 7 April 2024, Steve McCurry’s icons, from the mythical Afghan girl to reportages on India, Tibet and other photographic masterpieces, are on display in the Arsenali Repubblicani near the Torre Guelfa and the splendid Museo delle Navi Antiche.

exhibition
AFGHANISTAN
The exhibition begins with a focus on Afghanistan, concentrating on the period from 1992 onwards. Moving portraits of Kabul, a city that has experienced more than 15 years of conflict, are presented. McCurry celebrates the humanity that emerges in the midst of hardship, as shown in the fascinating portraits of miners in Pol-e-Khomri or children clinging to the boot of a 1950s Chevrolet.
INDIA
India, a country to which the photographer is particularly attached, is revealed in all its complexity through the artist’s photographs. From intimate portraits of a mother and child shot from a taxi window to visions of unhealthy shipbreaking yards, the images convey the vitality and contradictions of an immense culture. The crowded railway stations, in particular, become the scene of a harmonious coexistence between misery and wealth, challenging the Western perception of injustice.

BEYOND THE BORDERS
The exhibition then extends beyond the borders of India, through countries such as Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Yemen, Kashmir, Italy and Japan. A metaphorical journey that broadens the viewer’s perspective, allowing the diversity of the world to be explored through McCurry’s sensitive and unique lens.
BUDDHISM
In this exhibition, the photographer portrays Buddhism as an important and extremely personal subject. From mausoleums to Buddhist worshippers, McCurry captures not only the magnificence of sacred buildings, such as the Mingun pagoda and the Golden Rock in Myanmar, but also the spirituality embodied in the faces of practitioners from different parts of the world.
