Starting March 28, the monumental complex including the Rocca, the Tower, and the Camminamento del Soccorso—the extraordinary fortified system designed by the genius of Filippo Brunelleschi—will reopen to visitors every Saturday and Sunday.
The scheduled opening hours are Saturday from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Tickets will be available at Palazzo Pretorio.
La Rocca/Fortress
La Rocca was commissioned by the Medici family from the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi following the conquest of Vicopisano. The aim was to construct a defensive structure that would be impenetrable to enemy armies.
Brunelleschi designed a fortress with high crenellated walls supported by small arches and loopholes from which Greek fire and boiling oil could be poured onto attackers. In addition, several drawbridges were incorporated into the defensive complex.
The Walkway
The emergency walkway dates back to the 15th century. It was conceived by Brunelleschi as a privileged access route to the fortress from the river, in the event of a rebellion at the castle of Vico or an attack from the surrounding areas.
