Activities in the Natural Reserve “Lago di Santa Luce”

Guided tours, special openings or other activities every Saturday and Sunday of the month, also in winter. Hiking shoes are required for access in autumn and winter.

The Santa Luce Lake Reserve has a Visitor Centre, an educational and artistic workshop, outdoor parking and nature trails. Numerous nature events are organised throughout the year: synergistic agriculture and permaculture courses, musical evenings, children’s parties, rehabilitated animal releases, nature photography courses. The Reserve extends over an area of ​​about 105 hectares surrounded by forests and Mediterranean scrub around the lake of Santa Luce, an interesting wetland, a stopover for many water birds, an ideal place for bird watching. Surrounded by the Pisan hills, it includes entirely an artificial lake, made by Solvay Italy Company in the 1960s, as a water basin for fire prevention. In winter the lake is inhabited by different species of ducks and in the summer – the best period for a visit – you can observe the nightingale, the kestrel some migratory birds like the heron.
