Vecchiano, Avane | Climbing cliff (falesia)

The Avane crag is the ‘outdoor’ climbing gym for Tuscan climbers: it can also be climbed in the middle of winter and is easier than those on the Apuans.

It is divided into two areas: to the right of the medieval tower are the Valle dei Porci sectors with medium-high level routes on vertical walls, while to the left is the Baccanella, with more accessible parts to beginners and routes on slightly leaning slabs.

Due to the heavy use of many routes, the limestone has unfortunately lost its original roughness. Over the years, new pitches have been added to the existing ones and others have been redpointed unevenly, creating confusion in many areas about the actual route.

How to get there: From Pisa, take the road to Pontasserchio and at the roundabout turn towards Vecchiano. After crossing the Serchio river, turn right for Avane. The cliff is visible on the left. Park near the medieval tower where you find the access path.
