Santa Luce | Pomaia and Pastina

Pomaia lies on the panoramic road that leads from Santa Luce to Castellina Marittima. A village of Lombard origin, it has maintained the Church of Santo Stefano protomartire and the bell tower. The painted façade features a travertine staircase leading to a portal with a painted stone architrave. On the right side, near the apse, is the bell tower with military-style battlements. Internally, it has a single nave, two transept chapels and a presbytery raised by two steps. Pomaia has become famous for the presence of the Lama Tzong Khapa Buddhist Institute, founded in 1977, one of the largest in Europe and the most important Tibetan centre of the Ghelug tradition.

Pastina lies also on the panoramic road from Santa Luce to Castellina Marittima. It still bears evident traces of a medieval agglomeration: archaeological finds from the 15th century have been found under the floors of the buildings. In the village is the church of San Bartolomeo, of medieval origin. Like other religious buildings in the area, it has undergone several transformations over the centuries. After being severely damaged by the war in 1944, it was again restored and reopened for worship. The interior has a very simple line, with a single nave, and preserves a 17th-century painting depicting the Madonna with Saints Sebastian, Lucy and Rocco
