In the western part of the historical centre of San Miniato is Palazzo Grifoni. It was built by Ugolino Grifoni, secretary to Grand Duke Cosimo I, using the work of Giuliano di Baccio D’ Agnolo, who had the houses demolished, setting the new palace back from the street and opening a small square in front. This was a small urban revolution due to the considerable size and importance of the palace, which occupied an area that included part of the medieval walls used for its construction. Completed in 1555, it constitutes a significant example of late Tuscan Renaissance architecture. The large doorway set into the terracotta façade is surmounted by the coat of arms of the Grifoni family with two large windows on either side.
The interior features elegant rooms adorned with important stone decorations, but above all porticos and loggias from which to enjoy the view of an extraordinary landscape. Mined by the retreating Nazis in 1944, it was restored by the Cassa di Risparmio di San Miniato and later purchased by the Fondazione CRSM, which made it its home.
The palace hosts events and temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
