Pontedera | Piazza Martiri della Libertà

The square (called ‘Piazzone‘ by the people of Pontedera) began to take shape in the second half of the 19th century with the construction of residences by the local entrepreneurial bourgeoisie. The façades of the new buildings hid the manufacturing plants that went as far as the edges of the Era.

The south-eastern side is overlooked by Palazzo Crastan Pandolfi and Palazzo Morini (no. 27), one of Pontedera’s most beautiful, designed by Luigi Bellincioni in 1880 and restored in 2005 by architect Bartalini with a richly decorated monumental façade.

Palazzo Naldini (no. 20) and Palazzo Bruschi (no. 16) on the square were also designed by Bellincioni.

On the north side of the square, at number 135, there is a beautiful Art Nouveau building from the early 1920s with stylish floral elements and two rows of polychrome ceramic tiles.
