Crespina | Villa Il Poggio

The villa was built in the late 15th century by the noble Pisan Lanfranchi family as a hunting lodge, as were other villas in the surrounding area. It was later transformed into a villa and agricultural farm until it passed to the Livorno-based Della Longa family, who in the first half of the 19th century carried out the final works that gave the villa its current appearance.

The building has an austere structure with the front façade on three levels and the rear on two, but with a double stone staircase. The tree-lined avenue leading to the villa dates from the mid-20th century.

The windows on the façade of the piano nobile have stone cornices with triangular gables with low arches, typical of the Neoclassical style. The side entrance has a dramatic double brick ramp with an iron parapet overlooking a beautiful limonaia.

Inside is a large hall with neoclassical decoration and a small dining room frescoed with Rococo paintings. Adjacent to the villa is the Oratory of St. Francesco, probably built to an original design by Michelangelo Buonarroti although there is no historical documentation to support this.

The villa is now private property and cannot be visited.
