Crespina | Church of San Michele Arcangelo

The parish church, built at the end of the 19th century to replace the old 8th-century church that stood at the foot of the castle, has a façade with a single order of simple smooth pilasters supporting the triangular tympanum and embellished with a statue of St Michael Archangel.

The interior features a large chancel arch supported by double marble columns adorned with stucco capitals. The ceiling decoration of the nave, dome and apse with ‘Stories of Christ and St. Michael’ (1950-1954) is by Antonio Gaioni.

Of particular interest are two 14th-century panels: a ‘St Michael Archangel slaying the dragon’ attributed to Bernardo Daddi, and a ‘Madonna with Child and Musician Angels’ by Giovanni di Bartolomeo Cristiani.

The church was immortalised by Angiolo Tommasi in the famous painting: ‘Blessing in the Countryside’.

Today, the church is once again accessible thanks to a major restoration.
