Castelfranco di Sotto | Convent of San Matteo

The monastery, built in the mid-seventeenth century where the fortress of Motrone was located, was supported thanks to alms from the people and the noble Florentine Albizi family. The Augustinian nuns were dedicated to the education of the girls of the people and the didactic vocation of the place continued even later: in 1866 it became a conservatory for elementary education and more recently a nursery school.

The interior of the church has a nave with a trussed roof and a portico on which the nuns’ choir rests. At the main altar is the Madonna in glory and the saints Matteo, Antonio da Padova, Carlo Borromeo and at the bottom the portrait of the donor. At the back there is the nuns’ choir with walnut stalls.
