The village of Cevoli was for a long time the property of the Bishops of Lucca, although it is likely that the Counts of Strido, who had a stronghold in this area, exercised effective power here, before the Ceuli family (hence the name of the village) took over and began the construction of a church that remained unfinished.
The present parish church of SS Peter and Paul, whose construction dates back to the early 18th century, houses two valuable works: a Madonna with Child and Saints Peter and Paul, the only work (1490) signed by the Pisan artist Andrea De Pisis, and a large wooden crucifix from the 11th century, perhaps the earliest evidence in this area.
Cevoli is also home to beautiful villas and residences of noble Tuscan families such as Villa Ceuli and Villa Giusti, both privately owned.
