Capannoli, Church of San Bartolomeo

The Church of St Bartholomew in Capannoli, dedicated to the patron saint of the village – who is celebrated every year on 24 August – was founded as a parish church as early as the 11th century, but was rebuilt in 1398 using the materials of the old, ruined parish church. It became an abbey in 1631.

In the bell tower, built in 1822, are three bells by the Florentine bell foundry Morena.

The 19th century interventions completely erased the medieval structures.

The geometry of the façade reflects the three naves of the interior, characterised by tall massive columns supporting the vaulted roof.

Above the high altar is a valuable wooden crucifix from the 17th century, while on the left is a painting depicting the Eucharist (17th-18th century).

To the right of the altar is the 17th-century painting of the Martyrdom of St Bartholomew by the painter Giovan Stefano Marucelli.
