Calcinaia | Fishing competition field on the Arno

The stretch of the Arno River is one of the most abundant and high-quality fishing areas in Tuscany. Calcinaia hosts the annual sports fishing championship with a competition field consisting of a multi-tiered embankment with concrete steps that end very close to the river. In the past, the territory has also hosted the World Sports Fishing Championships.

Typically, five-piece fishing lines are used; the riverbed is compact, without underwater vegetation but with a high presence of obstacles on the bottom. The current varies depending on the river’s water level, which is linked to upstream precipitation. During the winter period, fishing focuses on carp and chub; as temperatures rise, the predominant catch becomes catfish.

The highest embankment is at a height of approximately 15 meters above the water level. It is not possible to leave the car near the fishing spot. You must park it in the square in Calcinaia and walk 100 meters. Once on the embankment, descend the two sets of stairs that lead to the river
