Along the streams on Monte Pisano are villages with old oil mills, buildings designed to extract oil from olives through pressing. One such village is Panicale, on the banks of the Rio Magno and on the road from Buti up to Monte Serra. In the village, which retains clear traces of its original layout, there are still the ancient oil mills and water mills that characterised the small settlement. They were built in Verrucana stone; you can still see the wheels that drove the millstones, the canals that conveyed water from the stream and also the arches that gave access to the courtyards
The hamlet of La Croce is located on the road from Cascine di Buti up to Buti. It originated from a settlement whose shape recalled that of a ship, so much so that in the past it was called ‘Bastimento’. It later took its present name because it stood at a crossroads with a cross and a sacred image. Even today, the so-called Via dei Frati connects Cintoia to Castellarso (the ancient fortification set on fire by Castruccio Castracani) passing near an old abbey now incorporated in the Valle di Badia accommodation facility
