Feast of San Genesio, the kids’ feast | Casciana Terme

For 70 years, Casciana Terme has celebrated St. Genesio, the patron saint of children, on August 25.

The Kingdom of Children

The Feast of Saint Genesio represents a “reversal” of everyday life. Children symbolically take possession of the town through the handover of the mayor’s keys to the Grand Chamberlain of the Kingdom of Children, played by a local boy or girl. “Ciambellano” refers to the traditional dessert still made for the occasion: round with a hole in the middle and filled with candied fruit and raisins.

The Hot-Air Balloon Launch

There are many fun activities and shows to entertain young and old alike with artistic performances, culminating on the final day when Casciana is closed to traffic and overrun by children, transforming into a wonderland of toys, with street performances, clowns, prize games, and creative workshops. The grand finale features the traditional launch of the hot-air balloon—the festival’s symbol—and balloons bearing messages of peace and kindness, carrying the greetings of the children of Casciana Terme far and wide.

On Tuesday 25 August, entry to the outdoor thermal pool will be free for all children aged 0 to 12 accompanied by an adult. Opening hours will be extended with a special evening opening from 8.00 pm to midnight.
