Villa del Gombo in San Rossore has opened its doors to visitors on special occasions.
The former residence of the President of the Republic, commissioned by Giovanni Gronchi and recently restored, has already hosted conferences, special guided tours, and numerous events in recent years.
Pioneering and extraordinary, the villa was designed in the late 1950s by Amedeo Luccichenti and Vincenzo Monaco. Its stilted structure, ring-shaped design, setting within the natural landscape, and attention to detail make it one of the most significant examples of modern architecture in Tuscany.
It spans approximately 640 m² and is raised off the ground by four steel supports: the compact volume is lightened by large glass surfaces that enclose a square courtyard at the center of the floor plan. It represents an early example of green architecture, in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s works, and is characterized by four concentric spaces: the courtyard, the continuous corridor, the rooms, and the terrace. The enormous louvered doors open like a book across their entire width, creating airy facades through the interplay of glass and wood.
Renovated, it features an air conditioning system, solar panels, fiber-optic internet, and Wi-Fi, a professional kitchen, and a conference room; inside, there is an exhibition of vintage photographs featuring presidents and buildings of San Rossore.
