Origins

The building, first documented in 1618, originated as the Oratory of San Michele alle Formiche on the Serre estate. current name comes from the presence of a valuable painting depicting “The Madonna with the Child surrounded by saints.” The painting, which includes the Almeni family coat of arms, testifies to the church’s historical importance, as it was used as a private chapel by the owners of the estate.

The connection with noble families

During the 18th century, the church underwent significant restoration work thanks to the Berti family of Livorno. Inside, the remains of the Dufour-Berte family and a servant were found, confirming the church’s central role in the owners’ private lives.

La Madonna della neve

The painting of Our Lady of the Snow (La Madonna delle Neve), kept from 2005 to 2011 at the “F. Bigazzi” Museum of Russian Icons in Peccioli, has returned to its original location inside the church.
