The salt train: steam train to discover the Salt Mine in Saline di Volterra

On 1 November, ‘Il Treno del Sale’ (The Salt Train) returns, the historic steam train that departs from Pisa, stopping at Livorno and Cecina, to discover the salt mine at Saline di Volterra. Below the program:

9.45 am departure from Pisa Centrale

09:15 Participants meet at Pisa Central Station, where staff from Ferrovie
Turistiche Italiane will be on hand to assist with boarding.
At 11:45, a 40-minute stop is scheduled at Riparbella, during which passengers will be welcomed with a tasting of local wines and a light breakfast featuring traditional local specialities.

On arrival at Saline di Volterra station, train passengers will be greeted by the local authorities. Opportunity for small-group tours of the salt and salt beer production facilities (subject to a fee – tickets to be purchased on site). Tasting of ‘potatoes in brine’ at the ‘Il Cavo’ recreation area.
Option of a traditional lunch at the dedicated facility within the same recreation area – to be requested at the time of booking.
