Cascina | San Giorgio a Bibbiano

The church of San Giorgio in Bibbiano has early medieval origins, although it is only attested from 1217. The term ‘bibbio’ is a variant of a water bird found in many areas of Tuscany, including around Pisa. Built with a single hall in blocks of verrucano and cavernous limestone, it differs from other religious buildings on the plain in that it is the only one with a south-facing façade.

The façade in Pisan Romanesque style has a portal covered by a small canopy surmounted by a double lancet window, inserted inside the bell gable (1603). On either side of the marble column in the centre of the bell tower are two early medieval bas-reliefs depicting St. George and the Dragon and a Rampant Dragon.

Near the church is Villa Del Torto, characterised by a façade decorated in neoclassical style. Villa Baldovinetti, later Zalum, is located on the Via Tosco-Romagnola: it is a historic manor house that belonged to the Florentine Baldovinetti family, later acquired by the Zalums of Livorno in 1863.
