Sant’Ermo is a cozy hamlet near Casciana Terme. It appears to have origins dating back to the 11th century, although it is first mentioned in a document from 1260 that refers to the current church of Sant’Ermete, at that time under the Diocese of Lucca, rebuilt in the 17th century as we see it today.
Just outside the village is the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Monti, which overlooks a beautiful setting of wheat fields. The present building dates back to the mid-19th century, when it was rebuilt by the peasant population after the terrible earthquake of 14 August 1846.
In 1945, the families built an avenue to make it less strenuous to reach the church, bordered on both sides by tall trees, elms and cypresses, each planted and named after a family.
