The façade of the Church of St John the Apostle and Evangelist displays an important portal with two historically interesting plaques on either side. The portal dates back to 1677 as stated on the pietra serena lintel together with the bishop’s coat of arms. The plaque on the left recalls the foundation of the church in the 15th century following the destruction of the previous one dedicated to the Virgin. The one on the right, which is difficult to read, mentions the testamentary will of a priest. The single-nave interior shows a plaque in Latin commemorating the ancient church of Santa Maria della Rocca dating back to 1189, three sandstone arches in the presbytery. It preserves interesting works of art, such as the 12th and 13th century marble pulpit supported by two lions, the 14th century wooden crucifix on the high altar, the polychrome wooden sculpture Madonna Enthroned with Child of the Giotto school (1255) and the reliquary of the Blessed Giuntini, venerated patron saint of Santa Maria a Monte, the octagonal baptismal font with bas-reliefs by Giovanni Rosselli (1468) The rectory door facing Via Roma has a pietra serena frame above which is a glazed terracotta roundel with the Medici coat of arms surmounted by a tiara.
The Collegiate Church is the focal point of Santa Maria a Monte’s most important religious events, including the Processione delle Paniere on Easter Monday and the Luminara dell’Assunta on 14 August
