UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Terre di Pisa

The Terre di Pisa area boasts an extraordinary heritage, including sites recognized by UNESCO for their universal value. The most famous symbol is undoubtedly the Piazza dei Miracoli complex, which includes the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, and the Baptistery. This unique complex embodies the perfection of medieval art and architecture.

In addition to this tangible heritage, the Terre di Pisa boast equally valuable intangible traditions, such as the ancient practice of truffle hunting and harvesting. This practice is recognized by UNESCO for its deep connection to the local culture and territory. This tradition has been passed down for generations, striking a unique balance between humans and nature.

Among the UNESCO World Heritage sites is the Selve Costiere di Toscana Biosphere Reserve, which includes the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park.

Lastly, the Metalliferous Hills National Park is not to be missed. In 2022, it expanded to include geothermal areas in the municipalities of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina and Pomarance in the province of Pisa, in addition to areas in the provinces of Grosseto and Siena.

A widespread heritage

From the majestic Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and universal symbol of medieval architecture, through the San Rossore Park, to the hills and villages where truffles take center stage, every itinerary is an unforgettable experience.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites: tangible and intangible assets

The Terre di Pisa boast a UNESCO heritage that includes both tangible and intangible assets. Piazza dei Miracoli, with the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Camposanto, is one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.

The area is part of the San Rossore, Migliarino, and Massaciuccoli Park Biosphere Reserve, a protected ecosystem that promotes biodiversity and sustainability. The Metalliferous Hills, included in the UNESCO Geoparks project, tell the story of the mining and geological landscape.

Added to this is the intangible heritage, such as the tradition of truffle hunting, a gastronomic excellence of the Pisan hills. A combination of elements that makes the Terre di Pisa a unique and diverse territory.

An increasingly more accessible heritage

The Opera della Primaziale Pisana is expanding its commitment to accessibility by making the monuments in Piazza del Duomo accessible to all. One notable initiative is the sensory bag, a free kit designed for children and young people on the autism spectrum. The kit includes items such as sunglasses, earplugs, and stress balls to help manage excessive sensory stimuli during the visit.

Developed with the contribution of 11 associations, the accessibility project also includes tactile paths for the blind, courtesy wheelchairs, videos in Italian Sign Language (LIS), and free tickets for people with disabilities and their companions. Accessibility Service Cards have also been introduced. Available online and at ticket offices, these cards offer clear information on services dedicated to different disabilities.

Training reception staff continuously is essential. At the same time, the Plan for the Elimination of Architectural Barriers (PEBA) is underway to further improve accessibility.
