The name of Calci, famous for its marvellous Charterhouse, originates from the ancient lime quarries dating back to Roman times. Due to its strategic position and the presence of the nearby Verruca Fortress, it was often involved in the medieval wars between Pisa and Florence. The presence of cottages and courtyards, leaning against convents or churches amidst olive groves and chestnut groves, has given the valley, which faces the sea and is protected to the north by the Monti Pisani, the name Val Graziosa.
This circumstance allows for a year-round favourable climate that invites walks on paths and itineraries in nature, practicable by both expert hikers and simple enthusiasts.
