“Sabatini Cup” Bike Race | Peccioli

The Coppa Sabatini, now in its 74th edition, is a men’s road cycling race held in Peccioli every September. It forms part of the UCI Europe Tour calendar, class 1.1.

The race has been held since 1952, when sports enthusiasts from the town of Peccioli decided to dedicate it to the memory of Giuseppe Sabatini, a Peccioli-born cyclist who enjoyed a brilliant career between 1933 and 1947, the year in which he died prematurely at the age of 36. The race starts in Piazza del Carmine and finishes in Piazza del Popolo

Set amongst champions such as Francesco Moser, Gianbattista Baronchelli and Giuseppe Saronni, the black-and-white face of Giuseppe Sabatini appears in the mural that two Portuguese street artists, Frederico Draw and Rodrigo Contra, have painted in Via Cavour in Peccioli
