Volterra is set on a hill between the Era and Cecina valleys. With its double ring of walls—the Etruscan and the 13th-century ones—it is a town with a medieval appearance, where one can still savour the atmosphere of an ancient village.
Volterra (Veláthri in Etruscan) was one of the main city-states of ancient Etruria and, during the Middle Ages, was the seat of an important bishopric. The town has been renowned for centuries for its alabaster craftsmanship, and its artefacts are now among the most important products of Italian craftsmanship.
