International Guitar Festival | Calcinaia

The Calcinaia International Guitar Festival returns from 2 October, much to the delight of lovers of good music. Now in its tenth year, the festival comprises four events spread over four Fridays in October, set against the backdrop of the historic Villa di Montecchio, and showcases the very best of the European classical guitar scene.

The first event takes place on Friday 2 October, featuring the Nordic sounds of Danish flautist Rikke Petersen and guitarist Finn Elias Svit, followed by the eagerly awaited tribute to Lucio Battisti by guitarist Roberto Fabbri, who will premiere the singer-songwriter’s famous songs arranged for the modern classical guitar with Mogol’s approval.

On 9 October, ‘The 19th-century guitar and the art of variation’ features lecturer Francesco Taranto, who will take the audience on a historical journey performed on precious period instruments.

The third evening, on 16 October, will first showcase the Latin American virtuosity of Fabio Montomoli, followed by the Carulli Guitar Duo (comprising Marco Battaglia and Mesut Ozgen), who will perform historical transcriptions of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven using a rare and prestigious guitar from the Risorgimento tradition.

The grand finale on 23 October is dedicated to the charm of Spain with the evening ‘From Andalusian folklore to flamenco’, which will see the Briccialdi Institute Ensemble take to the stage with a tribute to the maestro Paco de Lucía, performed by Juan Lorenzo and Federico Pietroni.
