Fridays in Sasso are back in July and August: at 7.00 pm, dinner in the village streets and live music
(see the poster opposite)
Sasso Pisano is, par excellence, the village of the ‘smoking lands’. Geothermal energy, known throughout the world for electricity generation, can be seen here in its natural state. Heat rises from the earth, and hot springs and thermal baths are abundant and widespread.
Of particular interest is the medieval village, built on a rocky outcrop, featuring the Church of San Bartolomeo and the ‘Buca di San Rocco’ below. Near Sasso, in a splendid valley crossed by a stream of hot water, lies the vast archaeological site of Bagnone: this is the sacred thermal complex of the ‘acque volaternas’, dating back to the third century BC.
Well worth a visit are the small archaeological museum, housing Etruscan and Roman artefacts, and the thermal washhouse near the historic centre.
