Guided Tours to the Sillana Fortress

Rocca Sillana stands isolated on an impassable rise surrounded by dense woodland. According to tradition, its name derives from that of the Roman general Silla who besieged Volterra in 80 BC. In reality, it is rather recent, being known until the mid-18th century as the castle or fortress of Sillano, a term first mentioned in a document dated 945. Instead, it is very likely that the term Sillano is a transformation of Silvanus ‘woody’, as this was an area very rich in woods.

Summer opening times:
Friday – Saturday – Sunday. Access is by guided tour only. Tours depart from the Rocca’s entrance gate at: 4 pm – 5 pm – 6 pm – 7 pm. No booking required.
Admission: full price €5; concessions €4 (over 65s / 6–12 years).

The Rocca can be reached on foot via an 800-metre path starting from the car park. From the Rocca, there are views over the nearby gorge of the Pavone stream and across a large part of Tuscany.
