Guided Tours to the Sillana Fortress

Regular opening hours in June:
Friday – Saturday – Sunday – Monday. Access is by guided tour only. Tours depart from inside the fortress at: 4pm – 5pm – 6pm – 7pm. No booking required. Tickets: full €5; reduced €4 (over 65s / 6–12 years).

Rocca Sillana stands isolated on an impassable rise surrounded by dense woodland. According to tradition, its name derives from that of the Roman general Silla who besieged Volterra in 80 BC. In reality, it is rather recent, being known until the mid-18th century as the castle or fortress of Sillano, a term first mentioned in a document dated 945. Instead, it is very likely that the term Sillano is a transformation of Silvanus ‘woody’, as this was an area very rich in woods.
