Sillana Fortress
Rocca Sillana – ©robertonencini
Origins
Rocca Sillana stands isolated on an impassable rise surrounded by dense woodland. According to tradition, its name derives from that of the Roman general Silla who besieged Volterra in 80 BC.
In reality, it is rather recent, being known until the mid-18th century as the castle or fortress of Sillano, a term first mentioned in a document dated 945.
Instead, it is very likely that the term Sillano is simply a transformation of Silvanus ‘woody’, as this was an area very rich in woods.
