The feast begins in the evening, with the distribution of the “rificolone”, paper lanterns tied to a rod and with a candle inside, which are used to light the path while climbing towards Federico’s tower. Together with the “rificolone”, people are also given a “mosca”, an ear of wheat tied with a head of garlic on the top of another rod, which will then be cooked under the ashes of the large bonfires. Indeed, garlic and ears of wheat are pagan symbols bearing a double meaning: to ward off evil spirits and to protect crops.
