Exhibition “Jump!” Photos by Philippe Halsman | Volterra

From 1 May to 27 September, Volterra is hosting the exhibition Jump!, dedicated to Philippe Halsman, one of the greatest portrait photographers in the history of world photography.

The exhibition at the Centro Studi Maria Maddalena offers the opportunity to step into the creative universe of an artist who revolutionised portrait photography, thanks to his 101 covers for the prestigious magazine LIFE. The exhibition highlights his ‘Jumpology’, a technique developed in the 1950s that involved asking his subjects – often from the world of Hollywood cinema – to jump in front of the camera.

A simple yet revealing gesture: at the moment of the jump, the social mask falls away and a more authentic and spontaneous dimension of the personality emerges. Among his iconic collaborations, the one with Salvador Dalí stands out, with whom Halsman created images that have gone down in the history of photography.
