“Astiludio – Flagweavers Contest | Volterra

The Astiludio is a historic national flag-throwing tournament that has been taking place in the splendid setting of Piazza dei Priori in Volterra .

On the first Sunday of September, at 15.15 o’clock, the bells of the contrade begin to ring and the four processions from the respective city gates head for Piazza dei Priori to challenge each other in the tournament that commemorates the celebrations of 1406 at the news of the fall of Pisa under Florence, then Volterra’s ally.

The Historic Astiludio includes a competition with each participating group performing for 30 minutes. It is preceded by the Torneo Giovanile (Youth Tournament) competition.

The participating groups will compete for the Guiderdone, the prize will be awarded to the group with the best choreography. There will be a spectacular competition in which each participating group will perform for 30 minutes. The jury will also consist of people chosen by the public
