Pisa | Public baths, former day hotel Cobianchi

In 1925, the entrepreneur Cobianchi built an underground day hotel under the Logge di Banchi. During excavations, a treasure trove of buried medieval gold coins was found, some of which were recovered and are now preserved in the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo on the Lungarno Mediceo.

The Cobianchi day hotel was inaugurated in 1926: from the large entrance hall, furnished with mirrors and velvet sofas, there was access to two long corridors that housed the rooms with showers, bathtubs and toilets, divided into 1st and 2nd class. In other rooms there were services for customers such as barbering, manicure, pedicure, laundry and ironing services. The interiors were decorated with white and turquoise glass paste tiles, designed with geometric shapes, the sanitary fittings were ceramic and the taps brass.

The flooding of the river Arno in 1966 caused extensive damage that led to the closure of the day hotel. In 2000 the premises were partially restored and reopened to the public, recently with guided tours and a permanent exhibition
