Lajatico | Church of San Leonardo

The Church of San Leonardo, built in the 13th century as a parish church and transformed in the mid-19th century with the addition of the façade, underwent several restorations and embellishments by the Livorno architect Angelo Della Valle, which were completed in 1856.

In the bright interior, the nave ends with a barrel vault. The high altar, destroyed during the war, was refurbished in 1957. On the façade is the bell tower with four bells, built at the end of the 19th century using local sandstone and bricks and recently restored. The style is neoclassical with a semicircular apse and a three-nave interior divided by cylindrical columns with Ionic capitals. Restoration of the pipe organ was completed in 1965. Note the rectory, next to the church, which features a three-arched colonnade preceding the entrance to an 18th-century loggia.
