Guided tours at the National Museum of San Matteo

12/09/2026 ore: 17:00 - 18:00

Museo Nazionale San Matteo, Piazza San Matteo in Soarta, Pisa

Saturday 12 September at 5.00 pm: An interactive tour for all in the galleries of the San Matteo Museum

A journey between East and West to discover the Islamic influence on Pisan architecture and the fascinating history of its ceramic basins.

An experiential tour to explore the links that bound the city of Pisa to other Mediterranean peoples, through the Islamic ceramic basins that adorned the façades of Romanesque churches, which arrived in the city through trade. Following a guided exploration of the shapes, patterns and colours, participants will be invited to reinterpret one of them, reproducing the design of a basin on paper and reimagining it through their own creativity.

A simple and engaging way to take a closer look at the museum’s treasures and, for a moment, feel like travellers amongst the cultures of the sea.

This will be followed by a workshop to reinterpret the observed motifs on paper – an immersive experience to rediscover oneself as a traveller amongst the cultures of the sea.

Ticket: €10 adults, €8 children aged 6 to 12, free for under-6s + museum admission (free for under-6s)
