Departure from Fonti di Docciola at 2.30 pm. A 6.5 km walking route lasting approximately two and a half hours. RESERVATION REQUIRED
The walls of Volterra are a work of military engineering dating back to the Etruscans and subsequently modified. The ancient walls, long sections of which remain, date back to the 4th century BC but remained in use throughout the early Middle Ages, when the Municipality of Volterra decided to build a new defensive system. Those walls stretched for about 7 km, while the current medieval walls are only 2.6 km long. The material used for the construction was panchino, a local variety of white stone, also used for cinerary urns and the masonry of buildings.
