Carlo Pepi was the founder of the Casa Modigliani Institution, where he established a research centre housing books and documents relating to the artist.

The hills and the countryside have always been a holiday destination for many artists, particularly the Macchiaioli and their successors, including Silvestro Lega, the Tommasi family, Adolfo and his brothers Angiolo and Ludovico, Francesco and Luigi Gioli, and Giorgio Kienerk (see the museum in Fauglia).
