The history of the medieval village of Montecatini Val di Cecina is linked to the copper mine that remained active until 1907 and represents a historic milestone in the field of copper extraction. Of the entire mining complex, which dates back to Etruscan times, parts of the 19th-century tunnels can be visited (the network of tunnels originally extended for about 35 km to a depth of 315 m), the Pozzo Alfredo tower with the lift “suspended above the heads of visitors”, the former management offices and the chemical analysis laboratory.
