It is an important economic and industrial center of the Leather District but also a city of art, of <\/span><b>slow food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a point of reference for <\/span><strong>white truffles.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>City of bishops and emperors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Under <strong>Frederick II<\/strong> the town reached the spotlight by becoming the seat of the imperial vicar in Tuscany, so much so that in the Middle Ages it was called \u201cSan Miniato al Tedesco\u201d. In 1622 it became a bishopric by detaching itself from the diocese of Lucca and building its own seminary not far from the Cathedral, in the area then full of houses and shops built leaning against the town walls.<\/p>\n<p>After Frederick II, <strong>Napoleon<\/strong> too came to San Miniato, first to obtain a certificate of nobility of his family, necessary to access the French military academy, and then during the Italian campaign, to visit his uncle Filippo Bonaparte. The events of <strong>World War II<\/strong> left their mark on the city, causing the destruction of part of the medieval buildings (including the Rocca di Federico, which was later rebuilt). Particularly painful is the massacre in the Cathedral at the hands of the Nazi, which inspired the Taviani brothers for their film <strong>\u201cLa notte di San Lorenzo\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cThe night of Saint Lawrence\u201d).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>The White Truffle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20405\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mostra-Mercato-tartufo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mostra Mercato Tartufo | San Miniato\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mostra-Mercato-tartufo-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mostra-Mercato-tartufo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mostra-Mercato-tartufo-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Mostra-Mercato-tartufo.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mostra Mercato dedicata al Tartufo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>San Miniato features an intense cultural life all year round, from theater festivals to classical music concerts. However, the highlight of its activity is the traditional <strong>National White Truffle Fair<\/strong> which takes place in the main streets and squares of the historic center on the second, third, and fourth weekends of November. This fair is preceded by other festivals related to the precious tuber in neighboring villages: indeed, the season begins in March in <em>Cigoli<\/em> (birthplace of the painter Ludovico Cardi called \u201cIl Cigoli\u201d) with the \u201cmarzuolo\u201d truffle and continues in <em>Balconevisi<\/em> (where a curious palio of the ducks is held in October) and <em>Corazzano<\/em>. In this village there is a 12th-century parish church and the Quaranthana Theater, home to the Paolo and Vittorio Taviani Performing Arts Photography Center and the International Center for Playwriting.<\/p>\n<p>San Miniato is also one of the municipalities of <strong>the leather district<\/strong>, with its companies mainly located in the borough of Ponte a Egola while in the countryside,<strong> the variety of Kentucky tobacco<\/strong> is grown and used for the production of the Tuscan cigar.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Besides truffles: tomatoes, artichokes, olives&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agricultural activity is concentrated in the southern part of the town area, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cgrinzoso\u201d tomato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">artichoke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mallegato<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (a type of cured meat), and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cmignola\u201d olive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are just some of the typical products that contribute to making San Miniato the city of taste and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cslow food\u201d.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is no coincidence that the \u201cmercatale\u201d, the produce and craft market of the project \u201cFiliera corta\u201d (\u201cShort production chain\u201d) was born here.
