Due to its strategic importance, in medieval times it was located at the c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enter of a fortified system of eight castles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the scene of frequent battles between Pisa, Lucca, and Florence.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A village on the slopes of Mount Pisano<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, it is located on the eastern slopes of <\/span><b>Mount Pisano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in an environment characterized mainly by olive groves (we are, after all, on the <\/span><strong>Strada dell&#8217;Olio Monti Pisani<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Pisan Mountains Path for oil lovers) and chestnut groves which for centuries have formed the basis of farmers\u2019 and locals\u2019 diet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountains are rich in streams and large areas planted with <\/span><b>olive<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>chestnut<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trees. In the 19th century the area underwent a notable transformation with the construction of numerous mills and oil mills which gave life to a thriving economy based on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extra virgin olive oil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was, back then, renowned throughout Tuscany thanks to the characteristics of the soil and a particular microclimate that benefits from the sea breezes, giving it a delicate taste that in the past was appreciated by Rossini, D\u2019Annunzio, and Carducci.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Baskets and handicrafts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other important activities are &#8211; or rather, were &#8211; the products derived from chestnuts, including the manufacture of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baskets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, this is a sector that is very weak today, with the closure of shops and workshops, and just very few artisans who still work the chestnut trunks, giving life to small, hand-made masterpieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Castles, villas and parishes<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20216\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Buti_Castel_Tonini-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Buti | Castel Tonini | Terre di Pisa\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Buti_Castel_Tonini-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Buti_Castel_Tonini-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Buti_Castel_Tonini-320x320.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Buti_Castel_Tonini.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Castel Tonini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town is dominated by the fortress of <\/span><b>Castel Tonini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with streets and buildings that still recall the medieval period, and by the <\/span><strong>Villa Medicea<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, arranged over four floors as if it were an elegant city palace.\u00a0In the historic center stands the <\/span><strong>parish church of Saint Francis<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which, although transformed, has a mighty bell tower with mullioned windows that recalls the Pisan-Lucca Romanesque style.
